manchester s rainy city music continues to celebrate 20 years of the record label in 2016 and continue the success of the last two vinyl releases by dele sosimi afrobeat orchestra, via their own label and also with berlin s innervisions label. the 20 year celebration is also riding high on the current huge success of the re-issue of their second ever release from 1996 by city people it s all in the groove , now available again by the hugely popular artist motor city drum emsemble. this new release by artists irfan rainy & rex leon is a 4 trk ep from their digi lp titled cross step drag, a reference to the house dance culture from new york city. the four tracks released here highlight the huge variety in styles of house music created by the mancunian duo. the a side s track one vodun is simply voodoo / tribal house music for lovers of the old school jovonn sound. track 2 smash the silence is a brand new version of previous digital only release where afrobeat & house music are combined. it features the rasping vocals of lagos based nigerian actress vera e and the definite influence of fela kuti. flip to the b side and get to the deep dark twisted underworld of black america via snoop story (ode to the wire) and you hear one of the moodiest dance records you will ever hear and a tragic story of snoop, one of the wire s best performers from the cult tv series. the final track on the ep manc union dub is a dub house groove where ghostly brazilian candomble vibes meet the electronic dub beats of rhythm and sound. rounding off a hugely varied four track sampler receiving support from a huge cross sections of djs including danny krivit, at jazz, rahaan, kai alce, mad mats, osunlade, karizma, severino (horse meat disco), dj spinna & marcellus pittman.

the last sound carrier was based around the notion of intrepid intergalactic explorers trying to get to earth, this time we’re taken 10.000 leagues below the surface to trawl the deep sea. all the way down there, we experience increased pressure, sub-zero temperatures, darkness and previously undiscovered new worlds. up first we have ‘lactarius indigo mission’, which has a distinct urgency and ‘in-your-face’ bitch slap percussion. the bassline writhes under a variety of squelchy, bleepy effects, which add a layer of depth and the whole thing feels quite electro. after that *from the space to the sea* continues the electro vibes with more punchy beats, a rugged b-line and heavyweight kicks. carriers use of quirky details give this track a unique character and contagious energy.on the other side we are treated to another strange carrier creation, the laidback kepler 22b. named after the first known planet to orbit a sun within what’s known as a habitable zone, kepler 22b could well support life. the track is serene and full of optimism, a fitting soundtrack for a distant earth-like planet. minimal workout * diver level 1000* closes the ep with its unusual arrangement and simple yet deadly programming. another addition to the impressive sound carrier catalogue and perhaps its most leftfield so far

sebastian fiegen rolls out his debut solo release for cadenza records this spring, with a trio of excellent house cuts on the theofidelity ep. the german producer has been crafting quality productions for some time now under aliases and collaborations, and its on lucianos label where he makes his mark as a solo artist. dopeman opens the ep with a rolling chi-town house style groove, a simple yet effective filtered vocal loop and sustained strings harvest the feel good vibes over its solid beats. fiegen keeps up the pace with anando, more drum led house grooves with a high production value, the vocal refrain cutting in and out of the mix whilst the simplistic bassline and woody percussion maintains the bouncing vibes. closing the ep is th01, again coming correct with the feel good factor with its use of the looped sample and lazy, hypnotizing drums. a cracking debut production from fiegen, and a well rounded release for cadenza.

another fine release on new york night people label. classic chicago inspired tracks containing a lot of the early 90 s ny house vibes. our personal favorite is the steady grooving no one man owns house which goes a bit on a classy detroit house vibe. comes with two eli escobar remixes.

for mimi music, komplexx (poolside recordings / silhouette noir) has delivered a melodic techno / progressive crossover. this moody tune is deep yet melodious and builds beautifully. it’s just one of those tracks that works, with its genre-crossing coolness and excellent production. the remix is provided by our lovely house-specialist sascha dive (deep vibes, cocoon, raum). the german master turns the original into a brooding techno affair which is driven by thumping bass and sparse percussive elements. the remix keeps building until there’s nowhere left to hide, turning the track into an absolute floorfiller!

next in line to work with underground imprint getme! is uk artist nicky otter, with gme012: i can t really explain (it), a two track release out on 14th march across vinyl and digital platforms. across the ep, nicky ventures between parameters of ambient electronica and big, bad club tracks. nickys outsider sound find its perfect home on london s getme! label, both artist and label undefinable by genre, shape or sound. a-side i can t really explain (it) is a straight call for the dance floor for those after sounds on a more house and garage tip. originally trained as a drummer, nickys percussive talent shines across this bassy number, complete with creeping melody and layered vocal samples for a track nodding to club edits from a nostalgic time gone by. moving into murkier territories, b-side sketch original slow is journey through the darker strains of electronica, hazy techno feels and euphoric ambient vibes. dreamy melodies and carefully mapped out drum patterns meet here, giving sketch original slow an other-worldly feel.

acid house pioneer jaime read is one of the few uk artists who has had the dubious honour of being ripped off by chicago house royalty. never one to let this early setback hold him back, jaime has gone on to an illustrious career, producing great music since the early nineties, and more recently in collaboration with legendary uk deejay felix dickinson under the name l.h.a.s. inc (larry heard appreciation society) this 4 track solo ep sees him mastering a variety of styles. the opener is a dreamy emotional r&b number called is it real what u feel? which features a gorgeous vocal turn from jaime himself. kaanlile floats a sumptuous melodica line over some mellow electro influenced acid. deep cut rolling dreams has slinky piano, soaring house strings, more vocals and strong ecstasy vibes. finally, a night in shirley closes out the ep in a beautiful boogie influenced, relentless but mellow groove

following the debut ep from label owners julien sandre and konstress, blind box comes back with the second release, signed by utrecht-based hot young producer julian alexander. established member of the infamous slapfunk crew, this bad boy caught the attention of the biz with his powerful old school flavoured minimalism, by the likes of people like brawther and tristan da cunha who packed a whole ep for their dungeon meat. when julian meets blind box, his deepest side shows up. two stunning bass heavy journey and a full analogue locked groove on b3 to define the entrancing vibes you ll find out of the box. on the a2 track we got remix courtesy of one of the finest producers of the underground scene, samuel andre madsen aka s. a. m. whilst its neighbour has always taken the plaudits on the party front the steely city of sheffield has its own house history, with much of it residing in the warm buzzing darkness of the studio. its here that we find our latest robsoul rookie. a fresh name for the label, but a producer who is far from new to the game. tommy vicari jnr’s first release was pressed to the black gold and released back in 2004. since then there have been sporadic outings, but the last two years have seen a reinvigorated tommy roll out over ten new releases and play a huge part in putting sheffield s house music firmly back on the map. threshold of eternity sees tommy drop the northern grit to replace it with shimmering warmth and sunshine vibes across all four tracks. fidgeting rhythms, chopped samples and groove-heavy beats and bass are spliced together to create an essential feel-good release.

for the second discours release, sheffield-based old-timer tommy vicari jnr takes control and delivers four cuts of sharp and sophisticated deep-house. proper summer vibes and skillful production by one half of 76-79!

sublime and slinky four tracker from james dexter on dessous recordings, steve bugs label for the deeper side of house. the young brit shows his mastery of the form with an ep that combines effortlessly club-ready grooves with exceptional sound design and a strong melodic sensibility. dexter clearly know a thing or two about creating dance floor moments, with each track exhibiting a classiness that belies his age. have it like that kicks things off with a chugging, hypnotic feel and crisp drums providing the basis for a cool vocal hook and thick, warm bass. no time gets a shade deeper and no less funky, while get to this points a little further towards the center of the dance floor. closing track 120 goes even further into the late night vibes with a seriously infectious groove.

brstl returns with two house cuts from jay l, his second release for the label. started in 2011 as a means to highlight house and techno being produced in bristol, the label watched over by shanti celeste and idle hand’s chris farrell is now into double figures.show me on the a-side is a finely constructed piece of house music aimed at djs and dancers. anyone who saw jays recent boiler room debut will know his musical style, steeped in classic us house, soul and boogie but with a tastefully bumpy uk edge. the b-side blue age is a deeper cut living up to its title, all wistfull piano keys and a subdued bass line. this is jay l and brstl doing what they do best, sending vibes from bristol to the world.
